My name is Nathaniel. I’m a New York-based wedding and fine art photographer.
I got my first real camera in 2008, and have been shooting more or less nonstop since then. My first photographic passion was street photography: seeking and capturing the briefest moments of life and expression is what led me to the vérité style of wedding photography in the first place. I love being able to catch expressions and gestures that only last a moment—and the challenge of doing that is what keeps me coming back.
I also love technology. I built and maintain my own computer and server, and have twice gutted and rebuilt my camera. Color-calibrating monitors and sensors is my idea of a fun and relaxing afternoon; tinkering with my computer is a constant pastime. If I’m not having a good day, one surefire way to improve it is to spend some time looking at the latest cameras and lenses. If you’re curious what gear I use, feel free to check out my hidden gear page.
And I especially love people. One of my favorite parts of living in New York is just how many people there are all the time: no matter how alone you think you might be, you’re never that far away from someone else, and they’re probably having a completely different day than the one you’re having. I am in awe of New York’s diversity and acceptance—it’s one of very few places I can imagine living in a relationship with my three partners. I believe everyone has the right to marry who they love, and I cherish every opportunity to document relationships in every form.
At my own wedding, my partners and I opted for a lot of posed shots, and we spent a lot of time gathering people and setting up those moments. Though it was no fault of the photographer’s, I realized later that what I really wanted was to spend more time enjoying the day we’d spend so much time planning. Luckily, she also captured hundreds of amazing candid shots, and those are the ones I love and look back on the most.
Reflecting on this realization is what pushed me to do what I do. I believe that the best photos are the truest, the ones that capture the day as it is, in all its honest messiness.
